Serena Williams: The Queen is Back, Everyone Bow Down

Earlier this week at the Sony Ericcson Open Serena Williams said that when she is playing well the only players in the world who could defeat her played on the ATP - men's - tour.

For a set-and-a-half Justine Henin must have looked like Roger Federer to Williams. Henin had won the first set of the Sony women's final 6-0 and was up a break of serve in the second. With the possibility of winning in sight and with a frustrated Williams across the net from her, Henin looked for all the world like the world's #1 player she is.

Yet, rather than take advantage of the situation Henin - choked. Her grounstrokes suddenly lacked their sting. Her serve faltered and shots that were winners were suddenly coming back to her. Less than one hour later it was Williams holding her arms in the air in triumph and Henin trudging to the net to congratulate the 0-6, 7-5, 6-3 winner.

This victory, coupled with her Australian Open championship, announced to the world that Serena Williams is now the women's player to beat. Williams is now the player no woman on the WTA tour wants to face; the woman who refuses to crack under pressure no matter how well her opponent may be playing that particular day.

Serena Williams, this generation's queen of women's tennis, is becoming more and more confident with each match she plays and the rest of the world is forced to take notice. Maria Sharapova, the undisputed endorsement leader in the women's game, must resign herself to the fact that she must play second-fiddle to Williams on the court. Same for Henin and any other player who thinks she may have a shot at the title of world's #1.

Long live the queen, the queen is back. Get used to it.
