In the competitive eating equivalent of Peyton Manning saying he'd skip the Super Bowl or Tim Duncan saying he might not show up to the NBA Finals, a report today suggests that six-time defending champion Takeru Kobayashi might not participate in this year's Nathan's Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest in New York City. He's due to go for his seventh Nathan's crown next month, but his manager Kumi Ozeki suggests that Kobayashi's title defense might be in danger.
"Kobayashi's mother died in March and he's currently taking a sabbatical. He's not even in training," the hot dog eating champion's manager tells Shukan Gendai. "I haven't heard a word from him about whether he's going to take part in the July contest and there's no way that I know to get in touch with him."
I sympathize with what Kobayashi is going through, but it would be tragic to have the contest without him. He's the best athlete in the history of his sport, and this year he faces the stiffest challenge of his career from American Joey Chestnut. This is a competition we need to see.
Hat tip: Deadspin.

Takeru Kobayashi's 6 Nathan's crowns are right up there with Michael Jordan's 6 NBA championship rings.
YES!!!
If you don't think so, imagine Michael Jordan trying to eat the food that Takeru Kobayashi eats in the amount of time that Kobayashi does.
Takeru Kobayashi is truly up there with Jordan, Babe Ruth, and Jim Brown as one of the greatest athletes of our lifetime.
BELIEVE IT!!!

Tim if those are your feelings you are really going to hate this one . The greatest athletic performance I ever saw came from not a footbal player not a wrestler (real of Course not wwe) not baseball it came from a ballet dancer named michael B. If you think you are an athlete get on the stage and hang with these guys for an hour and lets see how you do. Michal B broke his ankle in the first act many years ago and not only finished that performance but completed the next 3 nights lets see one of those SISSY QB's in the nfl do that Hdck they get a hang nail and they are out for weeks.

Eating; a sport get the F@%$k out of here, I agree with Tim. Though it is entertaining to see how many hot dogs these people can eat, this is no F#$%king sport.
Next time one of you losers when 3 Halo contest maybe we should put you on the cover of Sports Illustrated caption, "Biggest Loser Ever." Go get them Nelson and Dennis, make your parents proud.

this blog sure is funny haha Well all i can say is that most times anytime there is an event where it requires some kind of special skill or training to excel at it people will call it a "SPORT" and anyone who is really good at it would be considered an "ATHELETE" whether we agree with it or not. I personally dont think that eating a bunch of hot dogs qualifies but there are others out there who think so because not that many people can do it. On the other hand some football teams have overweight linebackers on them arent they considered to be atheletes? hhmm just something to think about
