Some Turkish Cypriots in Australia, where Baghdatis has a third-round match scheduled Saturday, have criticized Baghdatis for the video, in which he is reportedly saying "Turks Out." The critics say the language Baghdatis uses is racist. But on Friday, Baghdatis did not back away from the comments.
"There has been a lot of coverage of me appearing in a video on YouTube.com.," Baghdatis said in a statement issued by tournament organizers.
"In that video from 2007, I was supporting the interest of my country, Cyprus, while protesting against a situation that is not recognized by the United Nations.
"Now I would like to concentrate on the tournament and ask everyone to respect that."
The video was posted to YouTube 10 months ago but was reported in the mainstream media for the first time on Friday.

How is there anything wrong with what he said? This is no different than American patriots protesting British rule of the American colonies. I couldn't tell if there were any "racial slurs" in what he said, but even if there are, how is it different from the colonists calling the British soldiers "red coats" or "lobster backs"?
There's a pretty simple solution to this problem. Turkey should leave Cyprus. They have no claim to the island, and their invasion was condemned by the UN.

omg, the greeks and turks have hated each other for centuries. they both go back and forth at each other all the time. when we start worrying about other countries and their racist problems, we're in deeper trouble than i thought. in the end, each of us has the right to like or hate anyone we want to, and we have the right to voice our opinions on it, especially in the US. i don't like racism, but at least i'm smart enough to realize there will ALWAYS be racism and everyone has the right to be a racist if they so choose...just God help those that are.

Excuse me! BUT WHAT did he say that was racist??? He is with a group singing the Greek national anthem and then they chanted Turks get out of Cyprus. What is racist about this? The Turks invading Cyprus issue has gone on for over 40years. What would you do if some other country came and invaded your home took over your country and the rest of the world ignored it!

In Cyprus, the Turkish government basically has backed the turks stealing the land from Greek Cypriots. He is right, the U.N. does not recognize what is happening their and it's pathetic. But, the U.N. is a pathetic organizatoin, so what is new? They greeks and turks have been warring for years on that island and have held at a standoff for much of the time after the greeks stemmed the invasion.
They don't like each other, at all.

This is HARDLY a racist chant. No racial slurs or epithets were voiced. He is merely stating a political view, one which is shared by the majority of Greek Cypriots. Cyprus is Greek, and was invaded by the Turks. Wars and skirmishes between the 2 sides have sprung up every so often since the Turkish invasion of that island. I see absolutely nothing racist about the chant.

I have to agree with the general sentiment here. Greeks and Turks have a long history of not liking each other. Greeks and Turks on Cyprus REALLY don't like each other. Nicosia is a Mediterranean Belfast, or Beirut without the bombs - there's a honking great wall built right through the middle of the city, for pity's sake (though otherwise it's quite a lovely place.) And both sides play the victimisation card relentlessly, which rather lessens the effect.

Hello, dipsh*ts of the world and stupid people from around the globe. A Greek making comments about a Turk would be a "nationalist" comment, not a "racist" comment. Sorry, but Turks by themselves do not form a "race" category. And what's perhaps worse, is you have little or no history knowledge of Cyprus, which Turkey took from Greece. Wake up world, and at least TRY to look intelligent!

So apachejoeh thinks it's okay to call black people the "N" word? You sound like one of those Native Americans (yeah, I said it) who would not have hesitated to sell his own people down the river at the drop of a hat. It amazes me how conservatives use the term "Politically Incorrect" as if nothing offends them, when in fact it's nothing more than a license to be a bigot. You called blacks who lived in your neighborhood the "N" word, apachejoeh? I HIGHLY doubt that you did it within earshot. It's real funny how mental giants like apachejoeh and no. 16 warren garrison can talk mucho crap from behind a computer in the safety and security of their own homes. You'd never see those two go down to the nearest basketball court in a black neighborhood and talk that sh*t, because we all know that there wouldn't be enough left of them to fill a cat food can.
