A 9-year-old tennis player who grunts like her idol, Maria Sharapova, when she's playing has been kicked out of a tennis club in Australia.
The Melbourne Herald-Sun reports (via Sports by Brooks) that the girl, Lauryn Edwards, was told that she could no longer play at the Mt Carmel Tennis Club in Sunbury because an opposing player complained that "the grunting had become too much." Lauryn's father explains his daughter's grunt and the response to it:
"It's pretty slight and now and again she hits it hard and makes a loud noise and that's it," he said. Some people may find it annoying, but the fact is that grunting has become a part of tennis, especially women's tennis. Sharapova's grunts have been estimated at about 100 decibels, and if her opponents can tolerate it, so can Lauryn's.
"From just one comment, this has all blown up stupidly.
"There's no rule against it, so they've made a rule against it."

Kicking out a nine year for grunting on the tennis court. . . thats amazing. Kids merely copy their role models.

It's about time! I can hardly stand to watch tennis any more for the grunting by the men and women and the screaming by some of the women. It's obnoxious and has ruined the game. Unless it's a big match, I'd rather read about a tennis match nowadays and avoid the noise than watch.

Its all part of getting the most energy out of your swing and has improved the level of play for some of the athletes that use the grunting technique. Sporting events should never limit their players from trying to enhance their game and add power to their serves, etc. outlaw illegal drug use and behavior like that used by John Macinroe, but you dont outlaw noises unless they are made by the audience.

THANK YOU AUSTRALIA!!! It is like watching a cat in heat.
If there is no rule against gamesmanship by screeching, please make one.

I like when Maria Sharapova grunts because it makes me think about what it would be like. and that makes me happy....then I begin to grunt. I, then, turn up the volume on the television and we both grunt and then I turn on my Berry White CD for just about 3 minutes and 47 seconds. ONce that happens, I eat a twinkie then sleep for a bit.
just my 2 cents

Know this much is true:
You can turn off the sound and watch the match.
Didn't that occur to you?

I agree TennisPro. Sometimes I grunt and let out a little urine or only rarely soil my shorts but it really has improved my game. I'm glad you understand that what's important is my own assessment of what I need to do and not if it affects anyone else.

The little girl doesn't grunt naturally (if you believe the article), she is copying Sharapova and, yes, it is disgusting. Little 9 year old girls can be very obnoxious. But the Tennis Clubs are over the top snotty so who cares who grunts, all grunting could make a person want to S..t. This is a stupid article. I don't know why I clicked on to it...

Tennis grunting - like screaming during sex - seems to have become obligatory for many women. In some cases it seems to have evolved more as conscious "self-expression" than genuine exultation or exertion. Grunting and screaming have become fashionable. I suspect some tennis players do it to distract the opponent. In the case of sex, well... perhaps it is meant to complement or encourage the partner. The question is one of genuiness. I personally don't like extreme tennis grunters. As for sex screamers, I haven't had sufficient experience to form an opinion. It is a situation I hope to remedy.

My 14 year old plays the game. They need to concentrate on the game, not the grunts. If they stay focused on the game-it is a good thing.

So a girl can't make a grunt or any other noise while playing tennis? Is she suppose to be dainty and feminine when she swings and hits the ball? Is she suppose to complain if she brakes a nail or messes up her hair?
This is idiotic. Men and women grunting and making noise, especially when exhorting force, is primal and instinctive.
There is NO regulation on the books that states that a tennis player, especially a female tennis player, is suppose to not make any noise or just squeak. This means that no professional tennis player can play in that club.
The people who implemented this policy are idiots.

Grunting in tennis is ridiculous and unnecessary. It does not enhance peformance, it is used as a psychological advantage to unnerve the oppenent. It should be banned in professional tennis.

It is obvious that the "complainer" was merely a loser attempting to eliminate the tough competition. If I were the parents, I'd file a lawsuit for discrimination, but then this is America, don't know what will fly over there.

Absolutely absurd...for some to be ousted of a tennis club because of grunting, let alone a nine year old and for someone to literally write that the grunting is the reason they no longer watch the sport...completely ridiculous, it's silly, it's asinine!! The grunting assists an "athlete" to effect increased blunt force. You couch potatoes and t.v. "atheletes" who cannot remove your backsides from your couch and attempt a sport...turn the tube off.
