As much as anything else, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is known for its outlandish protests. So the fact that PETA is planning a protest at the Preakness Stakes can't be welcome news for the organizers of the next leg in the Triple Crown.
From William C. Rhoden of the New York Times:
The death of Eight Belles gave PETA a huge opportunity to make its points about horse racing. Some of PETA's points are valid, some are not, but right now, PETA is doing almost all the talking. If the people involved in horse racing aren't willing to step forward and engage in conversations about safety concerns in their sport, PETA's loud voice will be the only voice most people hear.PETA staged protests Tuesday in Lexington, Ky., outside the offices of the state's horse racing regulators, and it plans to have a presence May 17 at the Preakness and again three weeks later at the Belmont. The goal is to make celebrities and vote-conscious politicians reluctant to attend the high-profile Triple Crown races.
"If we suddenly make it kind of tainted, it will not be really the place where you want to be seen," Newkirk said. "We want other politicians, other people, not to wish to be associated with it."

Talk about beating a dead horse MDS. Peta's nuts. WE all know. This story was sad, and blown out of proportion by overcoverage. This is exactly what networks were trying to avoid when they made the good taste decesion to forego showing this animal being put down on national television. Cmon, find something new to harp on.

I'm all for naked women pretending to be horses, but other than that, PETA is flogging a dead horse.

PETA needs to change their name and take "ethical" out of the current title. Their is nothing "unethical" about owning a horse, dog, etc., and enjoying them. PETA, in some cases, has contributed to animal abuse and neglect by taking very emotional issues and "shaming" politicians and others into proposing legislation that actually hurts, not helps animals. Case in point, the horse slaughter issue. Due to the closure of the three plants in the US, horses are now being shipped even longer distances to plants in Canada and Mexico. The Mexican slaughter plants are unregulated and the animals are subject to much more atrotious conditions than could have been imagined here in the US. Rescue agencies are full to capacity here in the states with unwanted, half-starved animals due to owners not being able to pay for food. There are very few alternatives to getting rid of unwanted horses and PETA contributed to convincing legislators voters would vote them out if they did not stop this practice. As a result, legislators that knew nothing of the horse industry put forth and passed bills that in no way impacted them or their constituents. As a result, horses are starving, being neglected and in the end, still being slaughtered, just not in the good ol' USA.

Speaking as someone who has been involved in the horse business and the dog business for my entire life, I feel I need to comment on this latest stunt from PETA. I am not saying that every single person involved in either business does the right thing, but on the whole, these are people who devote their entire lives to working with these animals. Race and sport horses, and dogs who compete in both confirmation and sport competitions are amongst the most physically fit and well prepared beings in sport. I am tired of hearing PETA say that we abuse these animals in our own best intrests. These animals are trained for competition from the time they are young, and live to do so. As a professional dog trainer for 18 years, I have repeated told clients with misbehaving dogs, "give him a job"...PETA needs to focus on the real problems animals face in our society like puppy mills and slaughterhouses. Leave the rest of us alone.

PETA may sometimes use extreme measures, but the frequency of horses breaking down in the major races is a crime. Two years old is too young for this type of major punishment. If those in the racing industry would give their horses another year to develop, their bones would be stronger, their muscles more developed to take the punishment of a hard race. Someone who cares about animals needs to take a good look at the sport.

Here we go again. Wish we oould legislate PETA out of existance. They do much more harm then good.Has anyone heard about the necropsy results from Eight Belles? That is useful information that would help this from happening again.

PETA is SOOOOO WACKO !!!
If PETA had any valid points about safety issues
in horse racing....why doesn't someone point them
out in this articel ??? If the horse racing community is NOT responding to PETA....maybe it's because they don't wish to "dignify" their accusations with a response. Does anyone REALLY think that considering the COST of these racehorses....that someone would DELIBERATELY do anything to CAUSE these accidents or IGNORE safety
concerns that COULD cause these accidents ??
What is anyone gonna do ... the next time two
skiers fall on their way down an Olympic slope and
break something ??? BAN Olymic Skiing ??????
PETA is just SOOOOO WACKO !!!!!!!!!!

Funny how theyre all up in arms about racehorse but dont give a flying rats patooty about the thousands of greyhounds put down every year just for being slow. Most of the dogs are between 2-6 and not even injured but dont hear PETA doing anything about that. Bunch of lousy hypocrites.

AS usual PETA is correct. The horse industry breeds and drugs majestic equines in an inhumane and explotive fashion. These horses are forced to race against their will. The sleezy horse racing industry appeals to garish rich people, predatory profiteers, hustlers and sinister gamblers.

This world would be so much better off without PETA & HSA. They are the terriorists and if ANYONE does any research on them, it will be clear as day and can see where they are headed with all of this. It would be a sad day if they get their ways and I pray I'm not here for that if it ever happens. You will too as there will be no pets and lots of "nothings." And I am a horse/dog/cat owner/lover. It was a tragic happening but it could have happened in her pasture not even racing. Get a brain world & PETA LOVERS!

I believe that 3 year old horses are not mature enough to withstand the stress of racing in the triplecrown races.
Their bones particularly in their legs are stressed to the limit and sometimes, sadly beyond their limit.
All those races should be run by 5 year old horses.
Of course that would mean that people who owned such horses would not see as early a return on their investment . Always follow the money !

I have been in the horse businesses my entire life. Maybe SOME people abuse there horses but the whole horse business does not include abusing. The horses that race or do any kind of competitions are trained specifically for what they do.The riders especially. If you don't do the sport you don't know what your talking about.I am speaking as a dressage rider and speak for all who compete. You should try something before you complain about it.I agree with "Amanda" on the issue, you should be focusing on slaughter houses and puppy mills leave the rest of us out of it.

TO COMMENT # 12 BRIEN COMFORD You probably do not even know what a horse smells like or feels like especially under the saddle. Horses LOVE to run as do other animals. You have no idea of what you're talking about and I hope you have "pets" so PETA can grab them away from you someday because "it's inhumane" in their view to own any.
