On ESPN's Mike and Mike in the Morning today, Mike Greenberg made a brief comment that provided an interesting insight into ESPN's relationship with the blogosphere.
Greenberg said that one day, out of curiosity, he typed "Greenberg Golic ESPN" into Google, and was horrified by the results. Greenberg's bottom-line conclusion: "People cannot stand us."
Sure enough, the first Google result for that search query is a blog post headlined, "Weenie Greenie: ESPN Radio's Mike Greenberg Gives Us All a Lesson in Arrogance." The post mocks Greenberg and "his sub-normal-IQ sidekick Mike Golic."
But what really interests me about Greenberg's comment on the radio today is that it seems that if it weren't for that one-time occasion of Googling himself, Greenberg would not be the least bit aware that there are a whole lot of sports bloggers who rip ESPN on a daily basis. When you're sitting in a studio in Bristol, the sports blogosphere is easy to ignore.

So this is the first time he realized how arrogant he is, and how dim-witted his side-kick is, and how much the general public hates him and his show? He is not an athlete, yet on a daily basis he rips athlete's performances, personalities, and short-comings. Golic is almost tolerable, but Greenberg, like Berman, needs to go.
Oh, I haven't listened to him in years. I just assume he's running the same tired shtick.
Well you dont host a national radio show but yet you are ripping them. Doesn't that put you in the same category?
I enjoy Mike and Mike, maybe more than anything else on ESPN (except PTI). If you were to ask me why I like Mike and Mike, now that I think about it, I have no idea why...
funny stuff.
I'm with Rory on this one. I really enjoy Mike and Mike. I think they're pretty funny and generally have good interviews.
If I were sitting in a studio in Bristol I don't think I would care less what a bunch of bloggers thought about me either.
I think ESPN radio is like sex: No matter who it is, it's not really that bad. My case in point was the infamous "Fabulous Sports Blob/Babe", who's show was terrible but who I listened to daily due to the content she had access to in terms of guests. A sports host in Buffalo may be infinitely more talented, but who wants to listen to 24 hours of Bills/Sabres when you can listen to Mort, Gammons, Kiper, Olney, Clayton, et al?? That's why Mike & Mike do well. Who wants another morning of "Morning Zoo", "Kiss", Z-whatever" when they can get their sports in the morning??
As a former pro baseball plyr (father too), anytime these so called experts/pundits/non-players who've never worn a jock drill/dis an athlete without merit, I just want to say wtf do you know? Go back to doing the weather!
Now, some knuckleheads deserve it (Vick, PacMan, Chris Henry, that dumbass hockey plyr that just got sent to prison) but do some homework and find out what it's like when you're hurt, tired, have to deal with media bs, autograph (E-bay) hounds, missing your family, jet lag, etc. The majority of the fans only see the money, glory, fame.
Greenberg at least always admits and always talks about his lack of relevant athletic experience.
But you're allowed to comment on Mike and Mike as radio talkers, despite the fact that you (presumably) have never been the host of a nationally syndicated radio show?
Mike and Mike were my favorite thing to listen to on the station until Tirico and Van Pelt came along. I'd be willing to bet that for every person you find on the web that rip on them, you'll find a handful of people that DO like the show...these comments as proof.
ESPN sucks, The Ticket in Dallas is the best!!! Stay Hard!!
Here's my top 10 on why I hate the Mike and Mike show:
1. Very little / almost no attention to the NBA
2. Way too much baseball talk (just because you like it doesn’t everyone can take analysis from 15 different baseball analysts)
3. Metrosexual Greenberg schtick gets old
4. Teasing listeners into breaks gets old and so, so very annoying
5. Repeat not just topics every hour, but also use the exact same phrasing you used less than 1 hour ago (they can't come up with enough content for the show it seems)
6. Sissy, neurotic, OCD Greenberg caricature does not help with Jewish stereotypes
7. Too much focus on stupid bets (NCAA tournaments), stupid challenges (Golic’s Lent diet), and stupid obsessions (Brady Quinn and Chad Pennington)
8. Minimal listener interaction
9. Pre-recorded songs and skits sound awful and are not funny
10. Greenberg pretends to be smart and uses “SAT words,” but often either doesn’t know their definitions or pronounces them wrong
Not to mention the vomiting tracks-ugh.
They do have some good regular weekly experts on most sports, but for the most part they act stupid and juvenille a lot of the time. Maybe 4 hours is too long

ESPN stopped being cool and started being a mass media machine a long long time ago.The talk radio and news aspect of the networks are not as much about reporting on the sports news as they are about hype, stirring up controversy and attempting to influence and/or set the sports agenda. They should be thankful there isn't a viable competitor to their programming in most cases or else they would see their ratings start dropping like a rock. Greenberg and Golic are only 2 voices in a very obnoxious choir.
I love Mike and Mike !
Golic is guilty of this....and some poster as well. Just because I never played pro or college baseball doesn't mean I don't know enough to give my opinion. Two bits says Mr. Pro has never cooked a hamburger at McDonalds but he knows if the one served to him at Ditka's restaurant is cooked to his satisfaction.
Mike Golic is okay on the radio his sidekick Greenie Weenie Mike Greenberg is a wuss who thought it was shameful to buy Village People CDs. As actors in a soap opera Eduardo Yanez would make them kiss his feet.
I don't know why it surprises him. They have by far the worst show of ESPN's afternoon TV lineup and the radio show itself isn't much better. That being said, the pairing of an arrogant host with a dimwitted sidekick is nothing new in the entertainment business, but you need to have chemistry to make it work and they clearly don't have it...
Chemistry??? They have been on the air now for how many years? 5,6,7 ??? That is what there downfall will be, after a few years of the same stuff, you must re-invent yourselves to keep it fresh. Does it seem lately that Golic is out a lot? Maybe a change is coming.
