Mike and the Mad Dog, the most significant duo in the history of sports talk radio, has broken up.
WFAN, the New York radio station that has broadcast the show for 18 years, announced that Chris "Mad Dog" Russo is leaving the station and Mike Francesa will host the afternoon show himself. Neil Best of Newsday, who has been way ahead of the pack on this story and reported in June that a split was near, writes that Russo is expected to land at Sirius Satellite Radio.
Russo and Francesa didn't always see eye to eye, but it's hard to envision either of them ever doing anything as influential as Mike and the Mad Dog. Even when they clashed -- especially when they clashed -- their personalities made them a great radio duo. They'll be missed.

bill--well said--those 2 buffoons took the unwashed ignorant rabble and actually made them even less informed--true demagogues--now if we can get the other ass canned, the hopeless lumpen proletariat will have to find someone else to suck dry what little intelligence the new york sports fan

Maybe you should have tried listening to the show before you could have given a RATS ASS about what goes on on the Beast Coast. Maybe your pompous attitude is what labels you as a wrong coast moron! I love Cali but people like you should drop dead where you stand!

As a Boston fan I found Mad Dogs' hatred for basically all New York teams, especially the Yankees both inspiring and funny. Why he chose to leave a job where he was paid to antagonize a whole city is beyond me regardless of the personality differences. I feel as if a member of my family has died, that is what that show and those two guys meant to me. I will miss the Dog greatly but will probably still listen to Mike until I puke from the pro Yankee crap. God Bless Chris Russo.

Good riddance. I'm from Long Island and have heard enough of their show to say that while they know sports they tended to be condescending towards many of those who called, and sometimes simply ignored a person's question. Mike tended to do this more often.

One down and one to go! The only better news would have been that they both were fired....one crazy, ignorant, hateful of NY teams to a pathological degree, the other arrogant, ignorant, insecure, and completely intolerant of anyone questioning his worthless opinions-and when they spoke of films or politics you could be moved to nausea--go WFAN--now fire the other slob and our afternoons will be much improved

i stopped listening to mike and dog years ago after continuously bashing my sport, soccer. [it always seemed that soccer was the only sport they liked to bash, don't know why]. Yet, they would go on and on, ad nauseum, on horse racing and golf [yeah, those two wonderful 'sports'], and the Dog literally made me put a gun to my head with his constant discussions about LA Law....two arrogant punks, that's all they are.

I am somewhat of a fan of Mike, but I hate the Mad Dog. The man is retarded. Actually, let me take that back: calling the Mad Dog a retard is an insult to mentally-challenged people, so I apologize. All the man ever did was scream and yell about things he had little to no knowledge about, and then have a hissy fit when someone confronted him on it and proved him wrong. At least when comedian Lewis Black screams and yells, he's usually right, and, even during the rare times that he isn't, he's still freaking hilarious.
