That was a skit in which a group of cheerleaders (dressed in the colors of rival Center High School) "kidnapped" the Nacogdoches mascot. Then a second group of Nacogdoches cheerleaders came to the rescue of the kidnapped mascot, forced the "rival" cheerleaders to kneel in front of them, and shot them in the heads, execution-style.
Not everyone was amused.
The Daily Sentinel reports that students have circulated a petition protesting "gun promotion" at pep rallies, and two students wrote this for an editorial that administrators would not allow to run in the student newspaper:
We realize it was intended to raise school spirit, but it is inappropriate to allow such a display of excessive violence in a high school. This is not only unacceptable in a school environment, but also from a moral standpoint. This skit did not portray the other team as our opponent in a sports game, but as an enemy.Nacogdoches principal Nathan Chaddick, however, called the skit "simple, innocent satire" and said of the mock executions, "everybody enjoyed it and had a good time."
This skit and all of its implications were approved by an authoritative figure with the power and responsibility to edit the skit.Such an authority should certainly show more discretion in the future.
Cheerleader Skit Causes Stir
Nacogdoches (Texas) High School cheerleaders dressed as the Center High School Roughriders enter a gymnasium in a routine that has come under fire from more than 120 students who signed a petition protesting 'gun promotion' in the skit, which shows these purple-clad girls being gunned down after stealing the high school mascot.

I used to work with Mr. Chaddick when he was an Assistant Principal. At that time I had the highest respect for him and for his judgement, however, this incident shows a lack of judgement for allowing the skit at a 'pep' rally and for Mr. Chaddick to comment that the skit was 'simple, innocent satire' is downplaying the severity of the incident. I hope that the students involved were repremanded. I find it hard to believe that Mr. Chaddick wasn't more concerned.

There is nothing wrong with this. The students and cheerleaders were having fun. This country needs to stop being so uptight about this kind of stuff. Someone is probably going to sue the school over this and that is what is so pathetic. Get a grip people and have a little faith in our young adults. This was creative! Not destructive!

Know the man, know the town, know the area, lived there.
Doesn't surprise me, just disappoints. We were pretty silly, too. But that was a different time, not as apt to be lived out in real life. Adults must get control of these things or you will have another "sad and shocking" high school story to tell.

You are so right! And what concerns me more is the voice of the young child on the video. They just showed a whole audience of young children that violence is o.k. in the right setting.

They used fake guns.. The skit they was doing was only going with the music. I think if some1's kid thinks its OK to take a real gun to school and shoot people because of this skit.. That kids parents did something wrong in teaching the kid.. Just because you watch something like this doesn't not mean lets go get a real gun and take it to school and shoot people. Its OK because they did a skit useing fake guns.. Come on people.. Take blame for your kids dumb choices instead of blaming others, TV and video games.. If a kid takes a real gun to school to shoot people its no1's fault but that kid and the parents.. No TV video game nothing.. Please stop making excuses for kids DUMB choices

Usually I'd agree with you, Chris, but I am just out of high school and I don't find this funny or innocent at all. It obviously disturbed other students. There's nothing innocent about pretending to shoot another school's cheerleaders in the head. "Cops and Robbers" in first grade is innocent fun. An orchestrated routine involving something like this is excessivly violent, especially considering the fierce competition between high schools. Last yeard, my school had a huge fight because some kids from another school came to our school after it was let out and began antagonizing the students from my school. They were mobbed. It wasn't pretty.

you have got to be kidding me. of all the things we have to worry about you took time for this. can we blow it any more out of perspective. i doubt the girls are going on a murder rampage anytime soon. its a skit and free speech so move on. worry about which idiot will lead us next and if he can do anything worse than the last. the bar is set pretty low.

As a teacher, I think all that were involved should be reprimanded. This is a very sick skit. It nauseated me to hear people laughing.

Well As a teacher you should embrace the creativity that these cheerleaders used. But I know you, as well as most of tyhe teaching proffesion, will continue to indoctrinate our children with Liberalism and socialism. There was a time not to long ago when competition was allowed. Out of this competition came a winner and a loser. I was on both sides of this equation many many times. Losses helped me understand that to achieve goals you had to work hard. Harder than your opponent. Winning gave me the satisfaction of being prepared as well as the respect for the effort put forth by my opponent.
Today Everychild has to play, recieve a trophy, and be considered equal in all rights and standards. This entitlement attitude is already present in our society thanks to these practices, and will only continue to increase if we as parents, teachers and administrators don't encourage healthy competition with all of the successes and failures that come with it. Some of my most memorable highschool and college memories are not of the championships we won, but rather that bittersweet feeling, knowing that victory was in our grasp and within reach, only to have it taken from us. Loss in every aspect of life, encourages us to search ourselves, to strive to do better, and to always take away higher character. In science, as it should be everywhere, negative results are equally as important as positive. Failure dictates improvement. always has....always will.

Note that the editorial was not allowed to run. This echoes today's campaigns where hatred is spewed and violence stirred and no one gets reprimanded or called out UNTIL the numbers start to drop. Sarah Palin is prime for his and McCain complicit. It's just another form of the same thing and with all the school violence in the worst imaginable taste.
This skit and all of its implications were approved by an authoritative figure with the power and responsibility to edit the skit.
Such an authority should certainly show more discretion in the future.

These types of attitudes are what's wrong with this country today, the attitude that EVERYTHING is ok, Well guess what? Everything is not ok, that kind of "skit" does not belong in a high school, or any shcool for that matter. It's not ok. It was completely inappropriate, and there needs to be some type discipline. The adults that watched the practice, and the teenagers, who are know about violence in school, should have had better judgement. That was disgusting. I'm sure the students and faculty at Columbine are not laughing.

Actually life is that serious and fun can still be had without as you yourself called "crossing the line" Unfortunately, you are the problem, not the people calling for better judgement and responsibility to our society. I'm so tired of inappropriate behavior being package in humor with our children and we then wonder why they are mean-spirited, rude, unfocused and being left behind...LIFE IS SERIOUS, BUT WHEN IT'S TIME FOR FUN....THAT FUN SHOULD BE JUST THAT....FUN!

Troy re-read what you wrote and see if you still agree with what you said. You totally contradicted yourself.
I go to a high school in the Cleveland Municipal School District. If any of you don't know it, it's the district where the student from Success Tech walked into his school and shot several people. Now, I have to walk through a metal detector every morning. Police officers line the hallways with loaded guns at their sides. These kids need to come to school with me. Then maybe they won't find pretending to kill people so funny. Because in no way, shape, or form is it funny.
All of you that are trying to blow this off, I can tell led very homogeneous and sheltered high school lives.

The problem is not that the cheerleaders thought it was just a skit to cause laughter but it goes to the heart of guns and violence in the schoool systems. I read people saying that its just a skit or that "todays population is just too uptight". Are we too uptight when someone brings a gun to school and commits murder? We certainly dont joke about it then. While the cheerleaders we merely having fun at another schools expense Im certain that if the other cheerleading squad did some type of retaliatory skit (but took it a little farther) then things might escalate. And that is exactly why these things should not be allowed. Guns...whether used as a prop or not...has NO PLACE in the school system unless in the hands of an "authoritive-type" figure. Anyone ever heard of "Life imitating art"? Kids that bring guns to school and do these crimes learn them from seeing it in somewhere else....ie television, video games, music, etc. Lets be more responsible and not teach our kids or allow them to believe that guns is the only way to solve a problem.

I am sure the students and teachers at Columbine High School and Virgina Tech and other schools that have had shooting doh't think that we should chill out that it was just in fun. I hope you don't have an incident of violence that effects you personally, you may not find the humor in it.
