When it comes to advertising, Nike is the gold medal winner. Their commercials are modern, exciting and have people actually talking about how great they are, instead of wishing that the number zero (as in "Saved By ...") had never been discovered.Their new approach to soccer shoes, however, has a few people scratching their heads. Apparently, the Nike Merculiar and Total 90s, trainers that cost $150 each, are putting out a rather peculiar odor after their first game.
Matt Vickers, who is a 13-year-old goalie over in England, said he was accused of not bathing because the shoe smelled so bad.
"We weren't sure whether one of us hadn't had a bath, it was so bad. We had to drive with the windows open, it was really pungent," Matt's dad, Mark explained.Matt says that a lot of the guys at training had been laughing at the smell. He has now lost faith in Nike because of the stink they've caused.
So, what is the smell? Like, dirty socks or a bag of old egg shells or the YMCA? Nope, it smells like (chuckles), you know (can't keep it in), cat (hehehe), here, I'll just let Matt say it...
Barack Obama, I know you have a lot of things on your mind. You have the economy, the Iraq war, and what we should do with Vermont. Also, you've discussed possibly dipping your toe in the whole "college football playoff" business, but, and I ask this as a writer who enjoys laughing at things a lot, can you make your first order of business be to outlaw the word "pee" and make us, as Americans, say "wee"? How much more fun is that?He says: "I got accused of keeping the cat in my bedroom because it smelt like cat wee."
Probably the best part of this story comes from the comments.
SassyLady31 said -- "My son's got a pair of Nike Premier SG and they smell like cat's pee. I thought it was his feet so how surprised I was to see this on Watchdog. They are soooo bad they make the house stink and they've been banned to the garden."
latteaddict said -- "my daughter has 2 pairs of nikes. a pair of nike T90 for astro turf trainers and a pair of T90 laser footy boots. both of which absolutely stink. we have to keep them in the garage. i accidentally kept the trainers in my boot for a week, after which the smell was unbearable. it smelt like several cats had peed in my car. will i be able to return them to nike for replacements?"
janicewood said -- "WE too have suffered the stinky boots situation. My daughter was blamed for leaving her boots outside and letting a cat wee in them! Now we Know it wasn't her. sorry!"
I have to say, after reading this story and a lot of the comments, one thing is for sure. People in England have an amazing nose for cat pee. It must be like pie over here in America.

my son's nike cleats smelled so bad during a drive home from an away tournament, we pulled over on the side of the road and my husband put my son's cleats in the overhead luggage rack, we just couldn't stand the stench of cat pee inside the car. i just couldn't believe it when i read this article that we are not the only ones!!!
My daughters (2) Adidas soccer cleats also smell horrible...just like cat pee! I thought for sure our cats were making messes, but they weren't.
Where is this smell coming from- is the factory the cleats are made in swarming with cats?!
My sons brand new Nike football boots started to....not smell.....STINK!! after he wore them for the first time. We booked our tom cat in to have his nuts chopped off thinking he was the culprit and then I found this article.....Sorry cat!!
I wouldn't mind but he's a pedigree Bengal Snow Leopard.
