At her peak, Nicole Bobek was one of the brightest stars in figure skating. She won the U.S. championship in 1995 and the bronze medal at the World Championships that same year. But the teenage phenom was also notorious for her poor training discipline and her tendency for shuffling coaches -- she changed coaches at least 11 times during her skating career. Now at age 31, Bobek is in trouble that stretches far beyond being labeled a difficult teenager. According to an Associated Press report, she has been charged with being part of a drug ring in northern New Jersey.
Bobek, who has homes in New York and Jupiter, Fla., was arrested in Florida last week. The charge is conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine in Hudson County.
According to the prosecutor, Edward DeFazio, a total of 20 people have been arrested in connection with the ring.
Information from the Associated Press was used in this report.

I love figure skating & have watched it 4 several years, including Nicole Bobek. If this is Nicole Bobek's 1st offense then I think the judge should show some leniency toward Nicole. Everyone screws up in some shape or form. Now, If Nicole should become a repeat offender...that's another story. I'm not saying the judge should let her completly off the hook...she still needs 2 B taught a lesson. I think maybe Nicole Bobek has a little 2 much time & money on her hands & the poor little rich girl was lookin 2 party & 4 excitement...Well...She's definatly found the excitement if her ass ends up in prison! Did she not get a wake-up call when her fellow skater Christopher " Bowmen The Showmen " Bowmen died just a short time ago? I wish her luck but most of all I wish that she would just open her eyes & realize how damn lucky she is 2 have had the life she's had & do something useful with it... maybe try helpin out some kids who don't have it NEAR AS GOOD AS HER ASS HAS HAD... & probably never will have it as good, instead of shootin up or smokin a Crack pipe!! WAKE UP NICOLE!!!!
Are you kidding me? Leniency ? Mike Vick got a year in jail for dog killing. This stuff infects our children, it kills communities. You need to visit a rehab center before you call this a mistake. A real 1st offense or mistake doesn't get caught. First time caught means there has been a considerable amount already infesting the community. Was this a poor kid from the projects trying to get out ? Hell no. That makes it 1000% worse.
I love figure skating as well. I met her along with many other of the Olympic skaters, and she was probably one of the rudest and most self-centered athletes that I have ever met.
This story does not surprise me.
However, if it is her first offense, I think that they should give her a choice, offering her control "rehab" incarceration at a facility for treatment, and then house arrest for one year after her rehab, or jail time.
this brat was afforded every opportunity there is. they should throw her dumb a** in the can and let her sweat it out. this type of celebrity thinks they are entitled to do what ever they want without consequence.
Treatment? The article doesn't say she was using drugs..... A "ring" is usually associated with dealers. Treat her with about 20 years!
Sorry, but if she is convicted of DEALING meth she should go directly to jail without passing GO..
When someone says 1st offense I have to wonder did they mean 1st time being caught. If you do it for a year and then get caught thats not a first offense.
Drug rings don't give their victims second chances and usually target the young and impressionable - why should we give one of the leaders a second chance? Sorry but I heartily disagree with you about first offense - this is the first time she was caught.
Go directly to jail. Do not pass go and do not collect $200.
She's been arrested for conspiracy to distribute meth, not for using it. She should be thrown to the sharks.
Throw the book at her! Enough of these so called stars getting slaps on the wrist because they think that they are above the law. Are you listening Plax?
My mother in law was in charge of a local rink in the Chicago area, Nicole skated at many of the rinks in Chicago but kept getting thown out because of her rudeness and diva like behavior. Plus, her mom and her mom's girlfriend were always making waves no matter what concessions they were given. Basically, they were trouble makers that wanted everything their way no matter what because she was a 'star'!
yolandasopranos,
you are slightly off in one aspect. she is a star but not in a good way. she is a star PAIN IN THE Class but drop the CL and you get the correct term. Think PITA.
sounds like mother like daughter, she was behaving just as her mother did or taught her.
I was always a fan of her style, and I remember when her beloved coach suddenly died of a heart attack. If she is only a user, that is one thing, but if she is actually a dealer, and that can be proved beyond reasonable doubt, then she does deserve time. Look up what meth does to people. I have no sympathy at all for dealers.
So, is the USFSA going to throw her out for good now? Pretend she never exhisted? Just like they did to Tonya Harding. If you ask me, this is worse than what Tonya and company did to Nancy Kerrigan. They should also lock her up for good. Get these low life drug schmucks off the street. I have no sympathy for this spoiled rich brat. She's part of a drug ring! Not just a junkie that needs help and a second chance. Zero Tollerance, lock her up for life or better yet, death penalty. I wonder how many people are dead because of her we don't know about.
I think that the USFSA can not throw her out, as she is no longer a memeber!
I agree with you that legally & morally, dealing meth is more serious than rapping someone on
the knee --even if it had resulted in permanent
injury to N.K. But Harding's actions *directly*
impacted her sport -- it was a particularly egregious form of cheating. Drug dealing (unless stuff like steroids or uppers to fellow skaters) doesn't have anything to do with skating. It was
entirely appropriate for the USFSA to deal
harshly with Harding. I only wish the ISU had been as willing to deal harshly with cheating judges, up to and including stripping medals from skaters/nations who had benefited from collusion. But this business of Bobek's . . . this is for the legal system to deal with, not the USFSA. And to my knowledge, Bobek isn't competing anymore, anyway, which Harding was. I don't know how the USFSA could censure her at this point, even if they desired to.
Don't you think the death penalty is a little harsh? Considering this is her first offense and she HASN'T BEEN CONVICTED YET!
Capital punishment is normally reserved for the likes of mass murderers and terrorists.. people who really deserve to be put to death for what they've done.
She was a stupid little kid and now she an adult and has become a grown up loser. Congrats Nicole! Now go to jail, go directly to jail and never get out. How many people have died because of you?
