Torrential rains, lightning and downed power lines delayed last Saturday's UTEP-New Mexico St. get-together by more than three hours. The game was finally played (UTEP won 38-12), and in his Monday press conference, Miners head coach Mike Price called it "One of the most unusual games I coached ... I've never been involved in anything like that in my life." It gets better. Due to the power outage in Las Cruces, the UTEP players had gone more than five hours between meals. The solution: head to the NMSU concession stand before kickoff to get some grub.
For everybody.
"We went to the concession stand to buy turkey legs and sloppy joes for the whole team," Price said. "Eighty turkey legs, 60 sloppy joes, they are 4 or 5 dollars apiece and the Aggies gave us zero discount. Cash only. It was a scene I'd never saw before.Just a suggestion: the Miners might want to pack their lunch (both figuratively and literally, I guess) for their next game. They head to Austin to face the second-ranked Longhorns. Greasy hands could be the difference between getting blown out and getting blown out but still covering (the spread is -35.5).
"Then 10 minutes, boom, we're ready to go. We looked like barbarians, waving turkey bones in our hands. We missed a couple of tackles because of the grease on our hands."
