Heart Attacks Target Fans of Super Bowl Losing Teams

Since 1990, only three teams have made the playoffs after starting 0-3, and none since 1998. That portends a rough three months for the NFL's six winless teams (and the Redskins, obviously), but sometimes losing means you're winning, at least in the long run.

According to a study in the American Journal of Cardiology, fans of the losing team in a Super Bowl face greater risk of death than fans of the winning team. "The emotional stress of loss and/or the intensity of a game played by a sports team in a highly publicized rivalry such as the Super Bowl can trigger total and cardiovascular deaths."

Sounds dire. But for all the gnashing of teeth amongst Browns, Bucs, Rams, Chiefs, Titans and Dolphins fans, you're a relatively healthy lot. You just have the great misfortune of supporting teams that have no chance in hell of making it to the Super Bowl, much less losing it.

Just something to keep in mind next Sunday when your team is staring 0-4 in the face.

WHAT IS
BACK PORCH?

The easy answer:
Back Porch exists because FanHouse doesn't have a basement for its bloggers. The bigger picture? BP covers sports news that's funny, off-beat and controversial. In short, it's the other side of sports, covered with an edge. Enjoy.
