Two types of inmates end up in protective custody: those who have grown tired of getting the crap kicked out of them in the general population, and the relatively famous.* Plaxico Burress certainly qualifies as the latter, although it may have been just a matter of time on the former. In any event, Plax, who spent his first night as a convict at Rikers Island, was later moved to the medium-security Ulster Correctional Facility in Napanoch, N.Y. And now he's on the move again, this time to his permanent home for the remainder of his sentence: the Oneida Correctional Facility in Rome, NY.
Via TMZ:
We're told Plaxico -- who was sentenced to two years in prison last week -- will be separated from the general population and staying in the long-term protective custody unit.If nothing else, this should allow Plax plenty of time for introspection. And who knows, maybe he'll start a blog.
We're told there are only 18 inmates currently staying in Plax's section of the prison -- which can hold up to 43 at a time.
* I can speak with authority on the subject because I saw it on the National Geographic channel.

Obviously he really doesn't belong in jail But NY's ego bigger than ability to do the right thing
Plax does jail time for shooting himself in the leg. Another player gets suspended for a year with 20 days of jail time for killing someone while drunk. Watta f'ed up system!
the author of this article has no idea about how prisons work or about protective custody. there are numerous reasons why inmates go to protective custody. i was a officer on rikers island for more than 10 years and i graduated john jay college and law school he is misinformed
What a sinful waste.
They'll probably kick a few rapists loose early to make room for him.
I feel safer already.
I support you plaxico, you shouldn't recieve two yrs in prison for shooting yourself in the leg. There are other players in the nfl whose done worst crimes than that with less punishment! Stay strong brotha.
