David Garrard's radio show has been canceled. Certainly shocking news to, well, David Garrard, since nobody else -- including head coach Jack Del Rio knew anything about it for the first few weeks it was on the air. And after learning of Garrard's side job Del Rio kindly suggested that the Jags' starting quarterback find better uses for his Fridays. Like, I don't know, thinking about football.
"Less than 48 hours away from the game, it's not even a question," Del Rio said. "I don't even understand how anybody could ever advise somebody to think about doing something like that. It makes no sense."
Garrard says he chose Fridays because it's rarely a travel day and didn't interfere with team meetings or practice. And if Del Rio hadn't stumbled upon the show while flipping channels (no doubt while sitting in the rocking chair on his front porch while sipping lemonade) Garrard might still be talking about Tim Tebow or taking non-Jags-related calls from listeners. Via the AP:
Del Rio was less than impressed, mostly because Garrard was talking about things unrelated to the next opponent two days before the game. So the coach went directly to Garrard and squashed the weekly segment.Del Rio added: "If you're not studying film, you ought to be relaxing with the family. So, those are my thoughts. I conveyed them to him."
Exactly. Like, say, Ben Roethlisberger.

Did he think that maybe the radio show relaxes him? Or that he's human and doesn't think about the job 24/7? It's his own free time, and he's not hurting himself or anybody else. This is ridiculous!

If it's not hurting his game then wtf? Furthermore, maybe he should be out drinking and raising hell like some of the other ones instead of hanging out and doing a radio show? Maybe the coach would prefer that? This is just insane--let the guy have his downtime. When people don't get even that little bit of downtime what happens? BURN OUT!

Another non sports person. When you get serious about what you do you will understand the commitment to the sport or whatever. Whether it is sports or tiddly winks the serious athlete or winker should b thinking about his chosen profession. pro athletes do not get to spend too much quality time with family anyway. He (Garrard)should be spending that time with family. The radio show is about him (Garrard) and not his family or his team. That's who he owes his time to. Football pays him very well for his time. He doesn't need the pay for the show.

I agree with Del Rio. Garrard landed a HUGE contract after their great 2007 and he has not lived up to the hype or earned that money in the last two years. Its his resposibilty as quarterback to take this seriously. Guys like Peyton Manning may do alot of advertising, but he wins games and he takes losing very seriously. I actually hope the Jags lose out the rest of the season so they can draft Tebow.

I must living in Jacksonville last year and all the problems they had with guys getting DUIs, Shot up down in the hood, family problems, and every thing else let the man talk on the radio on his off day at least he was not getting jailed, beating his wife, drinking at the local strip club, driving drunk, or out rapping women. Make up your minds he might have a big contract but he is still a man and once they say your career is over in sports on the field what comes next if you have a big name out there TV or Radio. You can't always follow a coach he might not be there next year if he doesn't WIN games. In high school I was told not to take computer key punch classes by the football coach. He also told me to go to a college where by Xmas of that year the college coach had left to go to another college leaving me own my own. You can't always follow COACH. Coach might be as dumb as a box of rocks. He should follow what's in his contract and live by that. I would have the talk show go out and do my job to. Garrard might be done when his contract is up anyway. Del Rio might be packing his bags this year if the don't make the playoffs.

If he is not winning games, he should not be doing this show. The coach watches the film and knows the game plan and obviously Garrard isn't panning up.

I used to be a competitive tournament tennis player. The best thing I could do before a match was always to relax and forget about tennis. Del Rio should do the same and allow his quarterback to have some fun before the game. It would pay off in more wins and fewer mistakes.

This is priceless. These guys have an OFFSEASON to do this crap. If you have ever been in a professional lockerroom you know that gameday contact (for any reasons) is off limits. Thney are too keyed up. Friday night is not the time to screw off and NOT think about the game. That is what FED MAR APR MAY JUNE JULY are for get it.
For all you "I played tennis" losers, this is a professional, brutal sport that takes massive concentration. Coaches expect it, owners deserve it.

Early this week an NFL player text a message about his play time. He was benched for a game. I commented "It's about free speech", many here thought it wasn't his right to speak out. Now here we are with a QB having a radio show. Coach deciedes he shouldn't do this in his free time. Many of you here think the coach is wrong. What it all boils down to are our rights. The point is, every time we give up a right regardless how small will give way to something larger.
