NFL Coaches Fight Club, Round 2: Mike Singletary vs. Tom Coughlin

NFL Coaches Fight Club: the Tournament. Because we have nothing better to do than predict what might happen if head coaches started punching each other in the face.

In a somewhat surprising move, Tom Coughlin took down the younger and bulkier Mike Smith in the first round of Fake Fight Club, but he'll have his hands full in the second round if he expects to become a Cinderella story in this fictional tournament. The opponent for the venerable veteran is none other than the top-seed of the entire Fight Club: Mike Singletary.

Singletary advanced by doing to Jim Zorn what most of Washington does at this point. He beat him to a bloody pulp, all the while laughing to his victory. It couldn't have taken more than a few seconds and there's no way Zorn landed any blows. It stands to reason that Singletary is well-rested and injury-free for his second-round scrap. We likely can't say the same for Coughlin, who had to have taken a few blows from Smith.

Remember, in Singletary we're talking about a guy who was the leader of the best defense in football history (yes, the '85 Bears had a better defense than any Steelers or Ravens team). He's in fantastic shape, especially when you consider that he retired more than a decade ago and is already in the NFL Hall of Fame. Singletary has also found a way to will Vernon Davis to eventual stardom at tight end after Mike Nolan failed with the former first-round pick. (Now if he can do something with Alex Smith, we'll really be impressed.)

Coughlin's a dictator with his team and a strong-willed guy, but at some point he'll need more than that. He's just not young, big or strong enough to handle Singletary.

But who knows? Norv Turner gave Rex Ryan quite a scare in Round 1. Make your vote count.

WHAT IS
BACK PORCH?

The easy answer:
Back Porch exists because FanHouse doesn't have a basement for its bloggers. The bigger picture? BP covers sports news that's funny, off-beat and controversial. In short, it's the other side of sports, covered with an edge. Enjoy.
