Somewhere in the Philadelphia area Dan Leone shakes his head knowingly. The former Eagles employee was fired for making some derogatory comments about the team on his Facebook page. Leone was devastated, just like Mike Wood, a recently canned part-timer for the Lambeau Field maintenance staff. Unlike Leone, Wood didn't call out the organization via his favorite social media platform. Instead, Packers head coach Mike McCarthy had Wood fired after what turned out to be a misunderstanding. At least according to Woods.
Via the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:
Wood said he was sitting in a maintenance cart in a stadium tunnel when McCarthy was talking with members of the grounds crew.Any talk of breakfast food will not be tolerated, apparently. Wood was promptly fired and escorted out of the stadium. The 53-year-old admitted that he cried, but as a testament to his loyalty to the Packers, he didn't blow off the game and take a long walk to clear his head. Instead, he went to the Stadium View bar to take in the festivities. (In retrospect, Wood might have been better off taking that long walk.)
With the season's most-hyped game only three days away (Vikings-Packers), Wood said he yelled to McCarthy, "Hey coach, let's get the boys ready to kick some butt this weekend." ...
But on Sunday, Wood arrived at the stadium about 11:30 a.m. and immediately began his regular routine. ... Wood said Allen Johnson, the team's fields manager, approached him. "What did you say to McCarthy?" he asked.
Wood said he repeated what he had told McCarthy. Wood said he was told that McCarthy thought he heard him make a comment along the lines of "don't lay an egg" in the game.
The team later issued a statement on the matter: "The organization has standards of conduct that apply to all employees, full-time and part-time, in order to maintain a respectful workplace. Mr. Wood's supervisors determined he made an inappropriate comment, and he was relieved of his duties."
Meanwhile, Wood told the Journal Sentinel that "I will die in my grave knowing that I didn't say anything about laying an egg," which is something McCarthy won't be able to say about his tenure in Green Bay when it finally comes to an end.
* McCarthy, during a Friday radio appearance, said that "he did not fire anybody in the maintenance department." Maybe it was the other Mike McCarthy employed by the team.

McCarthy's been laying eggs all season long... hopefully he'll be the next one shown the door in Green Bay, along with his pal Ted Thompson.
What do I need to tell Mike McCarthy, so HE will lose his job?
McCarty is in trouble and it's showing. Even if the guy did say "don't lay an egg", though I believe he didn't say that. When the "prince stoops to fire the underlings for an offense, real or imagined, it's a bad sign in the kingdom. Anyone who knows anything about personal relations with employees who have less status than a Prince, knows that in the "real world" people are saying lots of things he/she doesn't want to hear. The last guy that did things like this, well there are several Richard Nixon comes to mind. The perfect role model for McCarthy not to follow. He didn't fir the guy, but he got himn fired and McCarthy knows that, and if he's a man he will get the guy his job back today or tomorrow...IF NOT HE WILL PAY the karmic PRICE OF PLACING HIMSELF ABOUT THOSE WITH LESS STATURE THAN HE HAS. He won't be the Coach of the Green Bay Packers forever and the laws of karma will apply to him....whichever way he goes.
The Greeks would say in the regard "Whomever the gods will destroy, first they make exceedingly vann" Are ya Listening McCarty..LOL of course not...no bad news for the PRINCE after all he's the Prince, former Princes aren't treated so well!
And if someone, even McCarthy worked for me, I would call him to my office ask him "What in the H*** are you thinking?" and ask him "What are yhou going to do to fix this today>" I'm sure he would whine around, but I wouldn't relent until he gave me the right answer "Jeez, I didn't mean to get him fired....I'll get him rehired" That's what needs to happen and the PEOPLE OF GREEN BAY OWN THE PACKERS, not McCarthy or even his boss. What kind of an example is that for a publically owned entity to present to the public?
"Lay an Egg!!" I have never heard a football fan use this expression regarding a football game. McCarthy is fried and has the time to fire part time workers from Green Bay, while he is making his millions doing a mediocre job. So he essentially fired Brett Favre and now a groundskeeper, if he wants to do the organization a favor, he should fire himself.

Why does the coach even care for one second about what a maintenance guy thinks? And enough to get the guy fired?! Is McCarthy really that fragile? --- McCarthy should worry a little more about the O-Line and a little less about maintenance...
Don't like the guy for the way he and the front office treated Brett Favre during off season. Brett deserved some loyalty from the org. When your HC is focused on the groundskeepers, you know you are in trouble. Had to be a real jerk to get this part-time guy fired over a comment like that.
I always thought McCarthy looked like the consummate schoolyard bully. Zero tolerance for bullies!
A honest working man lost his job because of sally sensitive? What a shame the Packers have become.
It don't add up under any serious review, seems easy for MM to avoid the truth so he can escape the scrutiny from his decissions. Sorry PACKER fans but now I have to really doubt anything coming from MM. Looks like Farve made the best move for him. I cannot support the team as long as this management is in charge. Was a diehard Packer fan for over thirty yrs. Even when I was deployed in other parts of the world I'd go to great lengths to view the game but for now I've lost interest. They have a pretty good quarterbak with A. Rodgers but sory he's no Brett Farve.
