Josh McDaniels is young, brash, foul-mouthed (!), and for the first six weeks of the NFL season -- his first as a head coach -- the Broncos were undefeated. They dropped three straight following their Week 7 bye, before heading to division rival San Diego. Broncos-Chargers get-togethers are always contentious, in recent years primarily because of Jay Cutler and Philip Rivers. With Cutler having whined his way onto the Bears, and wholesale changes in Denver, a lull in the rivalry wouldn't have been altogether surprising.
Nope. In fact, thanks to McDaniels' pregame "We own you!" proclamation, it was on like Donkey Kong. Of course, the Chargers administered a 32-3 beatdown and took control of the AFC West. Needless to say, some players took McDaniels' comments personally.
Chargers linebacker Shaun Phillips said, "As a coach, I hope he has that mindset, but to say you own us? You beat us one time. How much has he really done in this league? He had a team 6-0 and now he's looking up at us in second place."
Fair point. But Steelers safety Ryan Clark wasn't interested in posing rhetorical questions. He'd rather throw down first, get answers later.
"Honestly, my thought on that is, I would like to petition Mr. (Roger) Goodell and say, if a coach can talk to me like that, I should be able to fight him ... I don't know where he's from, but where I'm from, when somebody talks to you like that, they've got a problem with you. And we should be able to fight. That's the thing. If McDaniels was a player and started mouthing off he wouldn't make it through 15 minutes of practice before getting the Steve Smith-on-Ken Lucas treatment. But as a coach -- even one who is 5-9, 160 pounds -- he can say what he wants without fear of getting punched in the mouth. That said, I'm pretty sure you won't see McDaniels flapping his gums in Tom Cable's direction.
"If a player talks that way, you get to hit him. When a coach talks that way, you don't really get to strike back. Who wants to have verbal jabs with a coach? That's no fun. Let's fight."

ryan clark=typical low IQ thug mentality. Someone said something to me that I don't like. Me must smash him. If you can be verbally provoked into using violence to solve a problem you are a moron plain and simple.
RYAN CLARK HAS HIGHER IQ THAN YOU CHILLY AND I AM SURE HE IS A MUCH BETTER FB THAN YOU WOULD EVER DREAM OF BEING. YOU ARE I BIG MOUTH.
GO STEELERS BACK TO THE SUPER BOWL
Oh, to live in the simple world of Ryan Clark. In his world, you don't fight fire with fire, you fight fire by punching it in the mouth.
Oh please most coaches curse, Josh just got caught on camera. If you ever listen closely someone is always cursing. Both Ryan's need to grow up.
Both Ryans need to grow up and realize if you listen closely enough and can read mouths there is a lot of swearing going on in sports. Josh just got caught on camera.
RYAN CLARK HAS HIGHER IQ THAN YOU CHILLY AND I AM SURE HE IS A MUCH BETTER FB THAN YOU WOULD EVER DREAM OF BEING. YOU ARE I BIG MOUTH.
ladies and gentlemen...it speaks for itself
Given Rian Clark's performance against the Chiefs, he should worry more about his tackling technique than what coaches are saying...
