Alex Rodriguez's 500th home run ball sold for $103,579 to an anonymous bidder after an online auction ended Thursday night. It was a modest sum considering that, according to the New York Daily News, Barry Bonds' record-breaking 756th career home run ball was sold for $752,467 in 2007. Mark McGwire's 70th home run ball, which set a new single-season record in 1998, sold for $3 million -- the highest price ever for a milestone baseball.
The Daily News pointed out that the memorabilia produced by McGwire fetched such an exorbitant sum because it hit the market before the widespread use of steroids in baseball was uncovered and condemned. Rodriguez, of course, has admitted to steroid use, albeit for a short time during his career.
A-Rod's historic blast, which came off Kansas City Royals hurler Kyle Davies on Aug. 4, 2007, was significant in that it provided the New York Yankees' third baseman with a spot in baseball's hallowed 500 Home Run Club. It was the highlight of his prodigious 2007 season, during which his production slowed a bit as he tried too hard to poke No. 500.
Once the towering shot down the left-field line at the old Yankee Stadium was deposited into the stands, a weight seemingly was lifted off Rodriguez's back until that fall's playoffs, where he and the Yankees suffered through a first-round exit at the hand of the Cleveland Indians.
Rodriguez, as we know, is feeling even better these days after he earned his first championship with the Yankees this past fall -- and remarkable postseason production, personally, in the process.
According to multiple reports, a college student grabbed Rodriguez's milestone homer that day in 2007-- and, if he was the one that sold it, he has to be just as happy now as A-Rod was when he launched it.
The anonymous bidder? I guess, he's happy, too, even if he paid such a large chunk of change for a piece of horsehide.
"You can even see where the bat hit the ball," said David Kohler -- owner of SCP Auctions, which presided over the auction -- to the Daily News.
Well, in that case ...

Since steroids were legal and widely used from the 50's until the 1990's You and all the other hypocrites have no idea how many of your hero's used steroids ... so quit your whining and get over it! To think that "your hero" was clean and didn't use any PED's is just naive and plain stupid! Get over it and move on ... Athletes have been using PEDs as long as there have been organized sports!
