Goldy Gopher Runs Hard Against Youth Football Competition

Hell hath no fury like Goldy Gopher on the football field. The University of Minnesota mascot was criticized last month for mocking Penn State's Jerome Hayes during a pregame prayer. (The school later apologized on his behalf, God's wrath averted.)

Goldy was back in action this weekend, making a special guest appearance with other mascots, to take on a group of kids in an impromptu tackle football game. It was billed as the halftime entertainment for the Seahawks-Vikings get-together. Which it was. At least for Goldy.

Goldy, referred to by the announcer as "the Minnesota gopher ... who's dressed as a bear" (?), ran wild on a bunch of unsuspecting 10-year-olds. What started out as a friendly game morphed into the mascot stiff-arming his way to the goal line.

Impressive. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that Goldy is a witch, or that he celebrated Uga's passing. Upside for the religious zealots: he's definitely burning in hell, so there's that.

Tiger Woods Booed at Halftime of Stanford-Cal Game Saturday

I would argue that Tiger Woods is the most recognizable athlete on the planet. Sure, more people might know the name "Michael Jordan" or "Brett Favre" but I firmly believe that 90 percent of the world's population who get a chance to see Tiger immediately recognize him. (Does that make sense? No? Moving on...)

Anyway, he was introduced at halftime of the Stanford-Cal game Saturday (he's a Stanford alum), when Cal fans decided to boo him. Tiger appeared rattled at first (ostensibly looking around for Mr. Weekley) before recovering and claiming that the Cardinal would take care of business in the second half.

Head Coach Pulls a 'Belichick,' Yale Loses to Harvard

The nerds in the nerdery proved that, statistically, Bill Belichick was right to go for it on 4th and 2 against the Colts last week.

Pretty sure there isn't an egghead on the planet who'd support first-year Yale head coach Tom Williams' decision to call a fake punt from his own 25 on 4th and 22 with just over two minutes to go and leading Harvard 10-7. But he did. It didn't work. And a few plays later Harvard scored to make it 14-10. Game over.

Williams explained the decision after the game:

"We were playing to win the football game and we had done it all day. We set that play up all year and we thought it was worth 22 yards (but) we came up (seven yards) short. The whole idea was to keep our foot on the pedal, not play scared, and if anybody's looking for somebody to blame, blame this guy right here."

Nothing like invoking Herman Edwards' spirit in the name of winning. And as the New Haven Register's Dave Solomon pointed out, the play was successful -- it gained 15 yards -- "Yale didn't merely need a successful play, it needed a miracle play, one that might well be remembered as the greatest gamble in the history of The Game."

Results aside, sometimes it's better to go out guns ablaze than stand by as the outcome is determined for you (In the medical literature, this is referred to as the Wade Phillips Syndrome).

By all accounts Williams is a rising star and I'm guessing he learns from the experience. Plus, it could be worse: not converting a game-deciding 4th and 22 is one thing. Getting an entire stadium of Harvard supporters to willingly hoist "We Suck" signs is something completely different. The prank, perpetrated by Yale students posing as the "Harvard Pep Squad" is from 2004, but it's still hilarious.

KKK Rallying at Ole Miss Football Game to Protest Fight Song Ban

Ole Miss Chancellor Dan Jones recently banned the school's fight song "From Dixie With Love" for the remainder of forever, because some students, alumni and fans refused to stop chanting "The South will rise again!" at the end of the song. Reaction from many of these people has been mixed.

The Ku Klux Klan has weighed in on the decision and their reaction is, well, predictable: they're holding a rally because they don't approve of the lack of ~~racism~~ free speech in Oxford, and it will take place before Saturday's game against LSU.

"We are coming to Ole Miss to say enough is enough on attacking our Christian, southern heritage and culture, and it's time for every person to have a right to freedom of speech," [North Mississippi great titan Shane] Tate said.

[...]"We aren't coming there to cause problems or cause trouble," Tate said. "Trouble has already been caused by a handful at Ole Miss, including the black student body president, who wants to shape Ole Miss into yet another liberal sodomite college."

Look, I'm from the South, I live in the South and I went to a very Southern college. But you know what? Pride can only be used as a cover-up for racist tendencies for so long. And if anyone involved in this whole situation gives a damn about making our country better off -- and not enabling embarrassing Southern stereotypes any further -- they'll do what the school president asked and abandon the whole issue.

That's not to say that I think that every student/fan/alumnus who chanted "The South will rise again!" is racist. Because I do not. I am sure that there is a lot of legitimate "Southern pride" at Mississippi. I do, however, think that if anyone really cares what people say when they refer to the South (and isn't that the actual definition of "Southern pride"?), then they will throw up their hands, walk away from this tradition, and allow a group of largely irrelevant, bed-sheet-wearing bigots to act as such while trying to draw attention to their quickly dissipating cause.

Because a Traditional Play-Action Pass Made Too Much Sense

You see innovations like the West Coast offense or the zone blitz, and you're immediately amazed at the genius. That's what separate guys like Bill Walsh and Dick LeBeau from, say, Mike Tice and Eric Mangini.

And then there are plays that define a philosophy. For the Joe Gibbs Redskins it was the counter trey. For the Bill Belichick Patriots it's (at least for me) the variations of the screen pass. And for the Bethel University Royals it's the fake toss reverse alley-oop at the goal line. Or, as it's officially known in the playbook: Ace Rt Zoom 48 Granny QB.

Western Washington Takes 'Zone Defense' to Extreme

Consider this your annual Bellingham Slam update. Forward Tyler Amaya, who played at Gonzaga, Dixie St. and Western Washington before moving on to the bright lights of the International Basketball League, dropped 44 in a recent exhibition game against one of his alma maters (WWU).

Alone, not particularly noteworthy, but how he scored two of his points merit a mention:

When Western Washington plays zone, they take it literally. Four players straddled the lane as Amaya sat among them, gathered a rebound, and casually threw the ball in the direction of the basket. After watching that I'm surprised Amaya only managed 44.

Erin Drewes is probably best known as "Tim Tebow's busty girlfriend" or some amalgamation thereabouts. Turns out, that's totally untrue! Not only is Erin Drewes NOT Tebow's girlfriend, but she would prefer you not confuse her with Lucy Pinder.

Oh, right, and she's going to be donning body paint -- in the form of a Florida Gator's uniform, natch -- for an upcoming issue of Playboy. (That link is, quite obviously, NSFW.)

GIRLWATCHER: What is the real extent of your relationship with Tim Tebow? Are you friends with him-or did you just happen to stand next to him at a party?

ERIN: We are acquaintances through mutual friends and we would see each other here and there. We were standing together talking at a party at U of F and that's when the now-infamous picture was taken.

So, there, you gossip hounds! Stop trying to harass the poor girl. All she's ever wanted (as you can read in Girlwatcher's interview) is to get a decent education and do some modeling. And to not be confused with supermodels who like to get naked.

Wait, maybe that last part doesn't work so well anymore.

Erin Andrews Harassed by Rutgers Fans

Erin Andrews is a celebrity. And she has been since her sideline-sandwich-eating was made famous by various sports blogs. But then, as everyone knows by now, her fame took a dark turn in the past few months, if I may understate the whole "super-creepy-peephole-stalker" angle.

After that, America collectively (despite the continued evil nature and inherent Lucifer-esque quality of sports blogs) got its act together and decided to stop ogling Andrews in the open. Unfortunately, someone forgot to tell Rutgers fans that EA is now off-limits -- in the video after the jump, you'll see where some kid in the stands decided that screaming "ERIN!!!!" and "MARRY ME!!!" was the classy thing to do (maybe he thought he was at a Jonas Brothers concert or something).

All potshots at New Jersey aside, it obviously wasn't. Fortunately for Andrews, she got to interview "Lil' Jovi" after the game.

Like I said, classy. Almost as classy as Lil' Jovi giving what appears to be a pretty aggressive symbol to the ESPN camera. But I'm sure that's just a "really popular Jersey/Jovi dance move." Uh-huh. Right.

Duke Recruit Kyrie Irving Performs in 'High School Musical'

Duke University recruit Kyrie Irving wants you to know that he's just a normal kid. Sure, he's a fantastic basketball player, but that doesn't define him. In fact, aside from his on-court skills, he's like most other teenagers ... who are active in the school's drama department.

Via the Star-Ledger, Irving stars in "High School Musical."

This is just like that time in Glee when Mr. Schuester tricked Finn Hudson into joining the Glee Club! Except that Finn was the star quarterback. And Kyrie did it willingly. And Sue Sylvester isn't sabotaging the production. But otherwise, it's exactly the same.

Lame pop culture references aside, credit to Irving. And while it might seem mildly embarrassing for an athlete to dabble in the dramatic arts, it barely merits a mention when put into perspective. See former Dukie Reggie Love, for example.

Hartford's Cartwheeling Goalkeeper Propels Team to Defeat

In Friday's edition, the Hartford Courant only reports that the "Hartford men's soccer team couldn't convert its final three penalty kicks and lost at Stony Brook in the America East semifinals Wednesday after a scoreless tie through overtime."

But for those in attendance it was much more than that. Penalty kick shootouts may not be the best way to decide a tournament game, partly because after 90 minutes of actual soccer, it seems kinda odd that the outcome would come down to 10 uncontested shots from 12 yards out. But also because the whole experience can be anticlimactic.

That wasn't the case Thursday thanks mostly to the Hartford goalkeeper's predilection for between-shots gymnastics. Specifically, as the Stony Brook player lined up for the kick, the goalie would do cartwheels across the mouth of the goal, presumably as a warm-up, or maybe as part of some misguided attempt at psychological warfare.

That became clear after the Stony Brook player converted the kick and promptly cartwheeled his way around the goalkeeper on his way back to the bench. Undeterred, the goalie continued his pre-shot routine all the way to defeat.

Too bad you don't get points for vigilance. Hartford would have won going away.

Nike N7 Fund to Help Native Americans

There are close to 4.5 million Native Americans living in about 565 federally recognized communities across the Untied States. Many of these communities have been neglected, and unemployment in some areas is as high as 80 percent. The shortage of funds results in little to no organized youth sports activities. Diabetes and obesity are fast-growing problems.

Nike has decided to step in, teaming up with members of the Native American community to create the N7 fund, which will help bring sports to these communities. Nike has released a shoe dedicated to the cause, and it's being worn by such NBA stars as Brandon Roy and Tony Parker. In this video, we were on hand as the new N7 show was unveiled, we also hear from Sam McCracken of the N7 Fund and Andy Miguel of Nike Basketball.

Brandon Spikes Was Gouging Eyes

In a metaphorical sense, the Florida Gators abused Georgia in a 41-17 beat down on Saturday. But also, in a quite literal sense, linebacker Brandon Spikes attempted to gouge the eyes of Bulldog running back Washuan Ealey.

Florida has suspended Spikes for the first half of Saturday's game against Vanderbilt.

Reached for comment, Brandon Spikes did not say, "Captain Insano shows no mercy." But I wish he had.

Well, that wasn't very nice.

The Gators have been a bit feisty lately, and during a Sunday teleconference with the media, coach Urban Meyer said he'd address the issue.

"I'll talk with him today," Meyer said. "He's a very emotional player. If that's the case, I'll have a very serious talk with him." Monday, news came of Spikes' suspension.

The Orlando Sentinel noted that Georgia players previously ripped off Spikes' Helmet twice in the game. Still, this doesn't seem like fair retaliation. Eyes are important. People need them to see, you know.

Then again, there were probably some Georgia fans in the stands with capable vision who were wishing Spikes would have put them out of their misery.

William & Mary Crowns Jessee Vasold First Transgender Homecoming Queen

William and Mary, Virginia's first university (and the second-oldest university in the country), achieved another milestone Saturday: the college crowned its first transgender homecoming queen. Jessee Vasold made history at halftime of the James Madison-W&M game.

According to the student paper the Flat Hat, "Vasold identifies as gender-queer and prefers to be referred to with gender neutral pronouns: 'ze' in place of he or she and 'zir' rather than him or her."

Vasold admitted to being surprised by the news. Via the Daily Press' Melinda Waldrop:

"I knew I was nominated, but I was just surprised, because there were a lot of other really good candidates on the ballot," Vasold said. "I know all of the other girls, and they're wonderful people, really friendly. So I was surprised."

Waldrop adds: "Vasold said family members were in town for homecoming, and while they have been 'generally' supportive, some were unsure about Vasold's decision to accept the homecoming title. 'They're a little hesitant about this, but they realize that it's my choice to accept,' Vasold said."

William and Mary president Taylor Reveley seemed unconcerned by the outcome. "I knew Jessee before ... (It's) a little more publicity than normal for a homecoming queen, but it's just fine."

In case you were wondering, Junior Class President Mike Tsidulko told the Flat Hat that there is no rule against men or women running for opposite roles. Students who made nominations were simply asked to describe how the candidate exemplified Tribe pride.

And perhaps an example of how far we have come regarding gender roles in our society, the response on campus was positive. Again, via the Flat Hat.

"I've only had people congratulating me. I know that one of my friends was in a conversation with someone who didn't think that it was fair that I was able to run, because I'm not female-bodied," Vasold said. "But it generated a really good conversation, so they were able to talk about a lot of different things."

SMU Freshman Scores Goal From 95 Yards Out

Unless you're a close family member or an ardent SMU soccer supporter you've probably never heard of Ryan Rosenbaum. Until now, anyway. On Wednesday night against No. 16 Tulsa, the SMU freshman scored a goal ... from roughly 95 yards out. That's a nine and a five.

Not exactly how Rosenbaum planned it -- it looks like he was just clearing the ball out of his half -- but thanks to windy, wet conditions, the ball skipped over the goalkeeper's head for a 3-1 Mustangs lead. (They held on to win 3-2.)

As Yahoo.com's Chris Chase points out, it wasn't just Rosenbaum's first collegiate goal, it was his first shot on goal.

Goldy Gopher Is Sorry for Mocking Praying Penn St. Player

Goldy Gopher, the University of Minnesota mascot, has had time to reflect on his decision to mock Penn State defensive end Jerome Hayes as he prayed in the end zone prior to last week's game. And Goldy is very sorry for his behavior.

Okay, he didn't really say that -- Goldy isn't real, like, say, Steely McBeam, just some dude dressed up as a oversized gopher.

But University spokesman Dan Wolter issued the following statement.

"On behalf of Goldy and the University of Minnesota, I want to apologize to the Penn State player involved and anyone else who may have taken offense from this incident. We have reiterated to Goldy the importance of exercising appropriate religious sensitivity in the future."

I wonder if Goldy was scolded in full get-up, or if they made him remove his head first. Whatever, Hayes told the Morning Call of Allentown that "When I got up, I couldn't hear what he said, and he tried to shake my hand ... I wasn't trying to have any part of that." Before adding that his teammates told him that "the Gopher got the best of me."

Which would seem to embolden future mascots into clowning players as they prayed. Like most things, though, this will work itself out. All it will take is for somebody to administer a mascot beatdown in the name of the Lord. Problem solved.

Chase Mejia Goes From College WR to X-Rated 'Actor'

Sometimes our vision of the life we hope to lead gets derailed by the realities of trying to pay the bills or put food on the table. But for the lucky few (like Chase Mejia, for example) the real world is much better than anything that could be dreamed up.

Mejia was a high school football standout and had a scholarship offer from Kansas State to play wide receiver. Because he had previously transferred from Missouri State, and NCAA rules require transfers to sit out a season before regaining eligibility, Mejia picked up a little part-time work. Nope, he's not delivering pizzas or helping underprivileged kids learn to read. He's making porn. Naturally.

USF Vastly More Popular Than NFL's Bucs in Southern Florida

South Florida plays all its college football games at Raymond James Stadium. (For those lacking stadium name knowledge: the one with the giant pirate ship and loud, obnoxious cannons.) Typically, there are not as many people at a USF game as there are at Tampa Bay Buccaneers games; this makes total sense because USF is not Alabama or LSU. Or Florida State, for that matter.

But for Thursday night's game against Cincinnati, USF had 52,073 fans show up to Raymond James. That prompted some folks around the area to wonder if the Bulls would finally outdraw the Bucs (and, thusly, embarrass the hell out of Tampa's currently anemic NFL franchise). Well, they did. By 12,000 people.

Turns out it wasn't even close. According to the Tampa Sports Authority, the actual attendance for the Bucs' 28-21 loss to the Carolina Panthers on Sunday was 42,847, meaning that USF drew 12,226 more fans to Raymond James Stadium on Thursday night.

Even worse? The Bucs announced an "attendance" of 62,422 for Sunday's game, which, apparently means that 20,000 people didn't think it was worth rolling out to see them try to pick up a win against the almost equally hapless Carolina Panthers.

What does this all mean in the long term? Not much: USF was a top 25 team in the nation. A win over Cincinnati and dark-horse Heisman candidate Tony Pike would have put them in the driver's seat for a BCS game. The Bucs are in full-on rebuilding mode and not even a top-25 NFL team. So, yeah, this probably won't last forever.

Minnesota Mascot Mocks Penn State's Jerome Hayes as He Prays

Sure, it looks like the Minnesota Gophers mascot is mocking Penn State defensive end Jerome Hayes as he prays before last Saturday's game. But I like to think that it was deeper than that.

The Nittany Lions are ranked 13th in both the BCS standings and the AP poll, and the Gophers need all the help -- divine or otherwise -- that they can get. Perhaps the mascot, drawing inspiration from Hayes, figured it couldn't hurt to say a little prayer for Minnesota, too. Or maybe he was just making fun of a guy as he gave thanks to his god.

Seems like something Tom Brady would endorse, although, unlike the Patriots, the Gophers were on the losing end of a beatdown shutout. Baby Jesus must have seen through the ruse. (Let this be a warning to you, New England Patriots. Your time is coming.)

Larrques Cunningham of Lee University Becomes YouTube Star

Larrques Cunningham is a 6-foot-5 forward at NAIA Lee University in Tennessee. He's also a YouTube star, thanks to the video of him dunking above and two more videos of him dunking below, all from Lee's annual season tip-off event.

Cunningham is a junior who transferred to Lee from Roane State Community College. Most of his college games have been played in front of crowds numbering in the hundreds. But thanks to YouTube, his dunks have already been viewed by tens of thousands.
